It’s not feasible for me to run around naked

I tried. I really did. Alas, sitting in the sun on my patio for 15-minute intervals twice a day did not fit into my busy schedule. Why would I do this? My Vitamin D levels are too low and, for MSers, this may not be a good thing.

Lots of neuros recommend that we get outside more often, to soak up that important sun vitamin, Vitamin D. They encourage this because a lot of research suggests that increased Vitamin D levels will influence our MS, positively. Yet running around half-naked is not gonna work for me.

Plan B.

4,000 iu/day of Vitamin D tablets. We’ll see what my levels are in three months, per doctor’s orders.

To read more about my story with Vitamin D and sun worshipping, check out this blog post on http://multiplesclerosis.net from a few months ago. Here’s an excerpt:

“We don’t run around naked as much as we should”
I heard this during the 13th Annual UCSD MS Symposium in San Diego as neurologists fielded questions from the audience about the relationship between vitamin D and multiple sclerosis. And, they weren’t trying to be weird. Rather, these respected doctors encouraged us to monitor our vitamin D levels and get out in the sun more. Nothing new here, though, as we have all seen the same news bulletins: low levels of vitamin D may influence multiple sclerosis. And, there’s the hypothesis that supplementation with vitamin D may have a protective effect... [read more]

In the meanwhile, what has been your experience with the sun vitamin? Do you layout in the sun or take Vitamin D tablets? And, are your Vitamin D levels where you want them to be and, most importantly, how do you feel?

Best always,
Christie

  1. I take 50,000 iu/week of Vit D. And I try to spend time outside in the sun. But man it's so hot! I go to our community pool on Sundays for a few hours and when I get home from work I will spend time outside pretending to water the yard but really I'm watering myself LOL

I feel pretty good these days, other than the heat stuff. And I think the Tecfidera is helping me in that arena. Who knows if it really makes a difference other than the mental aspect... I'll take it though!

    1. Hey Sherri. So glad to hear that you are feeling pretty good these days and that Tecfidera is helping. It's hard with the heat but swimming pools are such a relief! So curious to learn how we do with the Vitamin D regimen. Hopefully, we get to levels that satisfy our neuros and our health! Cheers. Best, Christie

  2. I also take a 50,000 twice a month. Not so much during the summer as I tend to get my sunshine (Yes, even here in Ohio). Once I tried sunbathing in the nude...that explained all the "For Sale" signs in the neighborhood.

  3. I take like a bazillion iu of D a week, a neighbor goes to get it so as to keep my clothes on and out of the yard!

  4. I take 5000 a day, which seems to keep me normal, although to be honest, I don't feel much different when deficient. The whole sunbathing thing sucks with heat intolerance, so I stick to the pills, much easier! lol

    1. Yes, the pills are much easier. I, too don't feel much better but am curious to see how this changes over time. Take care!
